For the Community and Beyond: Partnerships Bringing Job Fairs & Trainings into Your Living Room

Mother Lode Job Training is working collaboratively with Columbia College to virtually reach and assist individuals seeking jobs and/or training.

MLJT Job Developers, Yvonne Penland, Lauren Griffith and Connie Perreira are co-hosting Zoom workshops with Columbia College Program Technician/Career and Job Placement Services, Mary Watts. The workshops are geared towards students and community members on a variety of topics, including:

Networking and Harnessing the Power of Mentors

  • Learn and know what education and skills you need for your dream job

  • Make a great impression on your dream employer

  • Learn about what a particular job is like, decide whether you love it or hate it

  • Research companies and do not be afraid to approach employers for an informational interview

  • Let the employer talk, ask questions about how they got the job and their position

Interview Tips

  • Save job description, note on it what you have done compared to the job duties

  • Practice interview questions, get a person to ask you general interview questions and ones that are specific to the job/industry

  • Research the company, mission statement, press releases, social media, and company website

  • Try to find out about the interviewers

  • Make sure you know location and how to get there

  • Bring resume copies, cover letter and references

  • Be rested, look great and be ready to show your best self

  • Send a thank you email or note afterwards

Benefits of a Cover Letter

  • Opportunity to talk about why you want the job and give an accurate picture of your skills and story

  • Describe how you are qualified and match yourself to the job

  • Get the attention of an employer so they will read your resume

  • Express enthusiasm and show passion for the position you are applying for

  • Make sure your information is interesting and to the point

If you would like more information on these topics or our services, please contact Mother Lode Job Training at 209-533-3396. Alicia, our Tuolumne Resource Specialist, will be happy to assist you.

MLJT Spotlight Employer: On-the-Job Training with Yosemite Dental

Yosemite Dental has shown high marks in Mariposa and Oakhurst for customer service, providing a variety of dental services and adapting procedures to deliver quality care during a global pandemic.

MLJT in Mariposa has recently partnered with Yosemite Dental to do an On-The-Job-Training (OJT). An OJT is one of the many services MLJT provides to qualifying participants and business owners in which the business hires an employee in an OJT contract with MLJT, and MLJT reimburses up to 50% of the wages for a set period of time.

MLJT creates a training plan with the Supervisor for the participant to gain marketable skills and gain hands on experience. This in turn assists the business in offsetting training costs while the employee gets familiarized with the position and learns about the challenges the position may entail. In this case, the OJT with Yosemite Dental is for a Dental Assistant. The OJT will last for up to 6 months, and upon completion of the training, the employer may retain the participant as a regular employee.

This is the first Dental Assistant OJT Mariposa has done, however there have been 3 in Tuolumne County. To learn more about OJTs, contact Mother Lode Job Training at (209) 533-3396 or visit mlt.org. To learn more about Yosemite Dental, visit their website at: https://www.yosemite.dental/
